Cleveland, OH – For years, either saline or silicone implants have been the staple in breast augmentation procedures. But what if there were another way? Now there is – sometimes referred to as the “natural boob job,” women now have the option of choosing a fat grafting procedure to plump their breasts.
“Fat transfers are growing in popularity for a variety of procedures, but especially in breast surgery,” says Dr. Rodney Green, who performs plastic surgery in Cleveland. “We harvest fat from other areas of the body to then place in the breast to increase their size. We essentially use a liposuction procedure to remove the fat from the bottom, thighs or other area of the patient, and then inject it into the breasts.”
Fat graft procedures have the benefit of giving women a more natural look, and are a great option for women who are concerned about the risks implants may pose, such as rupture, leaks or shifting.
Not everyone is a candidate for this type of procedure, however. Especially thin women may not have fat on their bodies to transfer, and it can require a large amount of fat to have a noticeable difference on the bustline. However, there are many advantages, especially in the world of breast reconstruction. Patients who have had a lumpectomy are typically great candidates for the procedure, as are patients who may just be looking to fill out an unevenly sized breast. And for women who aren’t looking for a huge increase in bust size, but rather a more subtle filling out, fat grafting is a great option, as well.
Using fat grafts to enlarge breasts has actually been around since 1985, but with less than permanent results. Over time, though, the procedure has been fine-tuned and many women are pleased with their results years later. In fact, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, published a six year study showing that the procedure “led to significantly larger breast augmentations, with more fat graft placement, higher graft survival rates and minimal graft necrosis or complications.”
This is big news in the world of plastic surgery, as just 25 years ago, the ASPS had essentially banned the procedure. But since then, plastic surgeons have worked hard to create a safe and long lasting solution for women looking for more natural looking breasts.
Now, the procedure can be used for a variety of reasons. Fat grafting can be a solution for women who want larger breasts but don’t like the idea of implants, and can even be used to disguise the edges and rippling that can occur with existing implants. Breast reconstruction patients who have had a lumpectomy or even a mastectomy are also using the procedure to return to natural looking breasts.
To get the fat into the breast, two procedures need to be performed. The first is harvesting the fat through a liposuction procedure. The fat will then be processed to separate out any unwanted components before moving on to step two, inserting the fat into the breast.
Patients love the results that using the fat from their own body provides. The breast can more easily be shaped and sculpted to look as natural as possible, and there are minimal incisions. Women who are looking for a more dramatic increase in size may still choose to opt for standard implants, however, fat grafting can be used to fill out the edges and create a more natural look then, as well.
If you think you are a candidate for this type of procedure, or are interested in learning more, a larger breast size could be just a phone call away.
